AutoCAD was originally marketed as “Auto-CAD-N” but was eventually renamed to simply “AutoCAD”. One distinguishing characteristic of AutoCAD is that it was the first commercial CAD application to use a pixel-based, rather than a line-based, model of the world. Early history

AutoCAD was developed to run on the Intel 8080 microprocessor’s 8080 microprocessor or, in the case of the RSX-11, Motorola MC68000 microprocessor, which had recently become available. The RSX-11 was released on the market in October 1978 and was the first integrated microprocessor to offer real-time 3-D graphics capabilities. It was also the first to support automatic document detection and recognition.[1] It was much more reliable than the 8080. A backup was provided by a programmable but less versatile microprocessor, the Motorola 68000. The key differentiator was that the 68000 was offered with or without a 3-D graphics subsystem. The 8080 did not have any graphics capabilities and was intended as a microcontroller.[2]

At the time of AutoCAD’s introduction, Intel’s 8080 was not sufficiently powerful to run the application, so Autodesk had to use the RSX-11. The combination of the 8080 and RSX-11 had some design advantages for AutoCAD, such as using the RSX-11’s 3-D graphics subsystem. It allowed Autodesk to program without using any graphics technology of their own, as was common at the time.
